Belarus, also known as Belarus is a country in Eastern Europe without access to the sea, bordered on the west by Poland to the north by Latvia and Lithuania, east by Russia and South by Ukraine. Its 207 600 km2 place it just behind Romania. It is a country populated by only 10 045 200 inhabitants, which has a population density of the lowest in the continent, 49 inhabitants per square kilometer. The majority of Belarusians living in urban areas, most major cities are Minsk (the capital), Gomel, Grodno, Mogilev, Brest, Vitebsk and Bobruisk. The country, a vast plain in the continental climate, is covered by the third forest, it is in some places unchanged since prehistoric times and home to animal species extinct in the rest of Europe. The main resources of countries in sub-poor soil, are agriculture and industry. If the former Polesie is a historical region formerly included in major powers such as the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Russian Empire, now Belarus is a young state. Belarusians took no real awareness of their uniqueness in the nineteenth century and were recognized by the world when their country becomes a republic of the USSR. Independent since 1990, Belarus is still deeply marked by its Soviet past, the Russians represent 20% of the population, Russian is the second official language after the Belarusian economy and has not been fundamentally reformed. The 1994 Constitution of Belarus is a secular state but the lives of Belarus is deeply marked by the orthodox religion.
