Italy (Italian Italia), officially the Italian Republic, is a country in southern Europe corresponds physically to a peninsula located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea and the two largest islands of the sea, Sicily and Sardinia. She is attached to the mainland by the Alps. The contribution of Italy to Western civilization is immense: it is especially the cradle of the Roman Empire and the Italian Renaissance. Established as a state since its unification (1861), it is now a parliamentary democracy, a founding member of the European Union (EU). Italy remains a major player in the international arena, consisting of its sixty million inhabitants, the strength of its economy (it is the seventh largest economy) and its role within many international organizations (Treaty Organization North Atlantic (NATO), EU, G8, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)).
