Poland (Polska in Poland) or the Republic of Poland for official purposes (Rzeczpospolita Polska), is a Central European population by almost 38 million inhabitants. It is bordered by the Baltic Sea, the Russian enclave Kaliningrad and Lithuania to the north, Belarus and Ukraine to the east, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to the south and Germany to the west. The country also shares maritime borders with Denmark and Sweden . Former State of the Eastern bloc during the Cold War, Poland is a member of the UN since October 24, 1945, Council of Europe since November 26, 1991, NATO since 1999, Union EU since 1 May 2004, and is part of the Schengen area since December 21, 2007.
