Iberian Peninsula, bounded north and east by Spain and south and west by the Atlantic Ocean. It is the westernmost country in continental Europe. It also includes the archipelagoes of Azores, Madeira and Berlengas, located in the northern hemisphere Atlantic Ocean. Portugal is a member of the European Union since 1986. From the fifteenth century to the sixteenth century, Portugal was one of the most powerful economic, social and cultural world with a vast colonial empire in Africa, Asia and Brazil, In 1916, the country enters the First World War, and involves no less than 100 000 men. In 1917 the German fleet attacked the Portuguese warships, French and British in Madeira. In 1974, the Carnation Revolution put an end to colonial rule, while it is democratizing the country. Today, Portugal is a developed country, economically prosperous, socially and politically stable. A founding member of NATO in 1949, a UN member since 1955, the European Union since 1986, it is also one of the founding countries of the euro area in 1999. In this country of relatively small when the dictatorship established in 1926 lasted until 1974 and despite the loss of its colonies, the economy took off after 1975, and that is almost 1 5 million Portuguese were forced to work outside the country to escape poverty and colonial wars. The high immigration areas are Brazil, France, Luxembourg (14.1% of the total population), Switzerland, the United States, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada and the Principality Andorra (where 15.75% of the population is Portuguese) and other countries. Today the theme of decline is becoming increasingly present even if the entry in the EU has helped to boost the economy (support for SMEs, farmers, new technologies, structures, roads). Migration has stopped and the country tends to become an immigration country in turn. The living standard of the Lisbon region has become the other major cities of Western Europe.
